New Year, New You! Back to School Tips from a Seasoned Scholar

Spring, that time of year when the flowers begin to bloom, bees begin to buzz, and school restarts.

This spring, I’m finishing up my senior year, and over the past 16 years I’ve gathered quite a few tips and tricks to share that will make transitioning back into school a little easier for you.  

At least a week before school starts, get back on a schedule. 

Listen, during break staying in bed until 3 PM is A-O-K. However, once school starts, you’re not going to be able to stay up until all hours bingeing TikTok and Netflix and then get up early for a full school day. Instead, re-train yourself a few days ahead of schedule to get a solid night’s sleep and get used to the jarring sound of your alarm. 

Create a calendar or choose a calendar app that tracks your activities and commitments.  

We all double-book at times; it happens to the best of us. You might have planned to study and forgotten about your soccer practice – all on the same afternoon. Or, you might haven’t planned ahead to ensure all your assignments would be finished on time: one minute you’re all caught up on an English essay and the next you realize there are three other assignments and PZD is soon. Don’t be that person! Instead, use the calendar on your phone, laptop, or iPad to schedule your time. This will allow you to see when you have an appointment, class, or  assignment due, especially if you use some audible alerts. Also, remember to schedule some downtime!

Organize and refresh your work space.  

Throw out all the old tests and papers and start new! As Paige Michalchuk from Degrassi said, “New Year. New Look!” 

You’re not the same as you were last year, so neither is your workspace. 

Eat clean, feel clean.  

As much as I wish I could live on Goldfish and chocolate-covered pretzels 24/7, I sadly know that this is not a healthful lifestyle. Making sure you eat a balance of proteins, veggies, fruits, and carbs is key. Make a banana smoothie if you feel like you like a shake or find healthy grab-and-go options like peanut butter sandwiches or an apple.

Take a break. 

Life can feel beyond overwhelming at times, and that’s why downtime is so important. Have a snack, take a walk, watch some music videos, bake some cookies- a break from work helps to refresh your focus when you get back at it.

Stay Positive.

Listen you rock star, if no one has told you today, you’re an outstanding human and you need to remember that. You’re going to rock this year, make some mistakes, have some triumphs, and above all, have lots of fun learning.

Now that you’re ready to rock this year, here is some motivation to keep you going. Roy T. Bennet, who died in 2014, wrote a book of inspirational quotes called The Light in the Heart. In it, he shared,Never stop dreaming, never stop believing, never give up, never stop trying, and never stop learning.”
