This quote easily sums up the story of an up-and-coming rock band and free-spirited young talent in the ’70s, as told in the novel Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. 

The band’s legendary story is told through a series of interviews with band members, producers, friends, family, managers, and whoever else had the privilege of watching the magic that was Daisy Jones & The Six.  

Daisy Jones is a young singer/songwriter trying to grow up in Los Angeles in the late ‘70s surrounded by rock stars, drugs, and record labels. Jones has all the makings of a star: a stellar voice, gut-wrenching song lyrics, and an alluring beauty. 

The Six is a talented rock band led by Billy Dune. Dune is an incredible talent, but upon finding out his girlfriend, Camila, is pregnant, he goes wild on tour, worrying his manager and family. To combat Dune’s mistakes, his manager connects him with a local singer. Alone these two musical forces are great, but they’re unstoppable together.  

Reid tells this fascinating story perfectly, capturing all the band’s ups and downs. She continually develops each character completely, painting a picture of who they are individually and together. This novel is an interesting new take on the classic trope of a band finding fame so fast that they can never fully catch up. 

With almost five stars on Goodreads, Daisy Jones & The Six is a page-turner that keeps you guessing up until the very last page. Reid includes every little detail, including full song lyrics, so that you think you are reading a band’s oral history. The ending is incredibly touching and makes you reconsider aspects of the story you never would have. 

The novel is currently being adapted into a 12-part limited series by Amazon. The adaptation will star Riley Keough as Daisy Jones, and Sam Claflin as Billy. The adaptation is slated to be released in late 2022 or early 2023.
