Last week, the GW Chronicle organized a live interview with the executive members of the Student Council. In this article, explore some insights from secretary Shivani P.

Describe your role at the Student Council. What does it mean to you?

I’m secretary and as secretary of the Student Council, my role revolves around organizing and documenting all meetings, ensuring everything runs smoothly and helping the team stay on track. I create detailed agendas, take notes during meetings and manage documentation of votes, decisions and action items. To me, this role represents responsibility and leadership, being someone who helps organize events and initiatives that helps bring our school community together. It also allows me to support my peers in making their ideas a reality, which is incredibly fulfilling.

What inspired you to join the Student Council and how did you become interested in your role?

I’ve always been passionate about leadership and helping others. So, joining Student Council felt like a natural fit for me. I wanted to be part of a team that makes a difference in the school community and provides a voice for students. I became particularly interested in the secretary role when I noticed there was a need for someone to bring structure and organization to the team. I’ve always enjoyed tasks like organizing events, managing information and communicating with others. So, this role seemed like a perfect way to use those skills while helping the team and achieving its goals.

Can you briefly summarize the events and activities that you have organized so far? What are your personal goals for the upcoming semester?

I’ve been involved in organizing a few events, including the Halloween October competitions where I created some certificates for the winners, and I helped coordinate the event. I also helped recognize students and teachers through the Student and Teacher of the Month program, ensuring that their efforts were celebrated.

So, what are my goals for the upcoming semester? I actually plan to implement themed spirit weeks where we can have fun days like Favorite Book Day or Cultural Celebration Day, as well as to organize personal graduation messages for seniors creating heartfelt video montages of messages for peers.

How do guys plan to collaborate with one another to achieve your common goals?

So, collaboration is key to achieving our goals. I plan to work consistently with my fellow Student Council members by maintaining open and consistent communication. I want to ensure that all meetings are well organized with clear agendas and action items, so everyone is on the same page. I also want to support my peers by helping with tasks related to event planning, whether it’s assisting with creating materials like certificates or coordinating efforts for specific initiatives. Additionally, I want to actively seek feedback from other members to ensure that their ideas are heard and integrated into our plans.

How do you plan to foster school spirit in an online environment?

Fostering school spirit in an online environment has some unique challenges. However, it can also offer creative opportunities. Like I said earlier, we plan to create engaging interactive events like themed spirit weeks, where students can participate in fun daily challenges or like dress-up days. Sharing photos and ideas virtually using Padlet, for example. We also want to focus on activities such as the personalized graduation messages where students can contribute to heartfelt projects like that celebrate each other’s achievements, virtual events such as a New Year’s celebration. We are planning out all the details for online competitions and these will be key in bringing the community together.

How do you believe that your involvement in the Student Council will contribute to your own personal growth and development?

My involvement in Student Council is already helping grow and develop my leadership, organizational and communication skills. And as secretary, I’m constantly improving how to manage multiple tasks, keep meetings on track and collaborate effectively with others. And these are all valuable skills like Aimeé said that I can carry into my future career. Additionally, organizing events and fostering school spirit is, in a virtual setting, is helping me become more creative and adaptable, which is really essential in today’s rapidly changing world. And I also value the responsibility, like a responsibility of being a voice for my peers. It teaches me empathy and how I can balance different perspectives.

How do you think your role in Student Council will prepare you for future roles that you might take on later?

Being involved in Student will prepare me for future roles that I decide to take in, most probably business or tech, or particularly software engineering. For example, as secretary, I’m learning how to manage projects, organize teams, communicate effectively — skills that are crucial in any business or tech environment. My experience in coordinating events and collaborating with diverse teams is teaching me how to solve problems creatively and work with people from different backgrounds, both of which are essential in tech roles that require teamwork and innovation. Ultimately, my time in Student Council is helping me bring a strong foundation in leadership, collaboration and project management.

What are your personal top priorities for the school? How do you plan on working toward them in your role at Student Council?

My top priorities for the school year are fostering a sense of community, enhancing student engagement and ensuring that every student feels heard and supported. To work towards these goals, I plan to organize events and activities that bring students together. Like as I mentioned earlier, the themed spirit weeks and the graduation message video montage. And these will not only help strengthen our community, but this will also create opportunities for students to connect and celebrate each other’s uniqueness. I also aim to create these platforms where students can voice out their opinions and their ideas, ensuring that we are addressing these needs and concerns. Like Aimeé said, we’re creating a lot of Google Forms just to hear your guys’ opinions. And by collaborating with other Student Council members and staying organized, I want to help execute these initiatives and encourage participation, ultimately working towards a school environment where everyone feels valued and included.

Can each of you share a fun fact about your time at Student Council from this year?

So, I guess a fun fact, this school year, actually, for the Halloween movie night, we were trying out lot of options to see what platform we could share the movie on, what kind of meeting platform we could use, and we ultimately decided on Zoom. And I feel like this influences all the collaboration and the critical thinking that we had to use. And honestly, it’s one of my fondest memories of working here.
