Students Learn About The New School at Virtual Admissions Presentation

Nearly every month, students at GWUOHS have the opportunity to attend Virtual Admissions Presentations. During these events, admissions officers from a university introduce their college’s admissions process and answer specific questions.

Last Friday, the counseling department facilitated a Virtual Admissions Presentation from The New School, a private research university in New York. Founded in 1919, this institution takes an unconventional approach to post-secondary education, challenging scholastic norms while focusing on creativity and innovation.

Freshman Lem E. was intrigued by the flexibility of The New School’s undergraduate programs.

“I was surprised to learn that students are allowed to create their own majors by combining multiple existing majors,” they said. “I wasn’t previously aware of any colleges which offered that.”

College counselor Kristen Smith encourages students to attend Virtual Admissions Presentations. She emphasized how these presentations can open up new avenues that students may have otherwise not considered.

“[Virtual Admissions Presentations] give students the exposure to all of the things a school can offer to help students determine what their particular needs and wants are in a school. They provide our students the unique opportunity to interact with an admissions representative and get their questions answered directly,” Smith explained.

While Lem’s personal goals do not align with The New School’s liberal arts focus, attending the presentation helped them understand a general education style that they like.

“I would appreciate being able to explore other disciplines,” they noted.
