On Wednesday, Feb. 4, while many GWUOHS students found themselves returning to their courses after a restful semester break, several students were about to begin their first day at a new school. At GWUOHS, enrollment is open for new students at the start of both the fall and spring semesters.
While joining midyear was initially tricky for some students, they found that GWUOHS’ support structure helped them adapt to their new environment.
Sophomore Rohail K. has felt the benefits of GWUOHS’ support staff on his transition.
“At first it was a small adjustment, but my teachers have been helpful by explaining assignments and answering my questions if I have any confusion,” Rohail said.
Eighth grade student Ella P. expressed similar sentiments.
“It was difficult at first to get used to a different workload and schedule but the teachers were very good with giving time to adjust,” Ella said.
Despite the academic adjustments, Ella highlighted how she was able to maintain social connections by making new friends and joining clubs.
“I felt a little nervous about making new friends at first but I realized that everyone was very kind and supportive. The clubs definitely help with meeting new people with similar interests,” Ella said.
However, students also faced some challenges. Rohail considered getting accustomed to the pace of his classes one of the biggest challenges during his transition.
“The hardest part was adjusting to classes that had already started and getting used to how everything worked,” he said.
Ella, meanwhile, found adjusting to a new academic routine the most challenging aspect of joining mid-semester. For example, on a snow day, she had to do schoolwork while her public school friends spent the day outside.
All the challenges considered, Rohail still enjoyed the transition experience.
“I’ve really enjoyed the switch because the flexible schedule allows me to play sports and take my time completing assignments,” Rohail said.
